To that end, he builds new structural layers out of shredded and cut-up photographs, which he glues back onto laser-cut wooden elements. He arranges the three-dimensional photo elements he produces so that they query the dimension of the visual sphere and put our perception to the test. Lai re-photographs his complex arrangements and thereby restores them to the two-dimensional sphere of a photographic print. He skilfully masters this alternating game with the dimensions. Through his deft use of colour and shape, he heightens the tension of contrast and the associated effect of depth.
